The purpose of neuropsychological
assessment is to explore and understand an individual’s intellectual,
emotional and perceptual abilities in relation to day-to-day problems
experienced and to provide a diagnostic formulation that includes
comment on health of brain function as well as to offering therapeutic
recommendations. Assessment of this type is a well-established
branch of clinical psychology. Typically, a profile of the individual’s
psychological condition and a diagnostic formulation is provided
in this type of assessment. Clients who have been injured in accidents
are often referred for neuropsychological assessment by personal
injury lawyers. In this case, the assessment can be helpful for
settling insurance claims. Detailed interview and use of published,
standardized psychological tests and questionnaires are the major
means by which this type of assessment takes place. Major areas of
exploration are memory, concentration, executive function (ability
to plan, initiate, pursue and complete everyday goals), and emotional
dynamics.
